NCCCO Practical Exam: 12 Tips to Pass on Your First Try

The NCCCO practical exam makes many candidates nervous because it is hands-on and timed. The good news: most failures come from a few avoidable habits. Use these 12 tips.

Before Test Day

  1. Read the practical exam content in the Candidate Handbook. Know the course and tasks for your crane type.
  2. Get seat time. Practice smooth swing, boom and hoist control at a training site or with your employer.
  3. Practice slow and smooth. Examiners want control, not speed.
  4. Learn the hand signals and be able to recognize them instantly.
  5. Review safety rules such as clearances and moving loads near people.

On Test Day

  1. Arrive early and rested. Bring required ID and any documents your test site requests.
  2. Do your pre-operation checks the way you would on a real job.
  3. Listen carefully to instructions. Ask for clarification before you start, not halfway through.
  4. Don't rush. Rushing causes touches, knocked objects and penalties.
  5. Keep the load under control and avoid sudden stops.
  6. Follow signals. Stop if anything is unclear.
  7. Stay calm after a mistake. Reset your focus and finish the course cleanly.

Common Reasons Candidates Struggle

  • Jerky control inputs
  • Not checking clearances
  • Poor communication with the signalperson
  • Nerves leading to rushed decisions
